Reading Center Manager, Supervisor, & Tutor
Academic Learning Department, April 2007-April 2010
The Reading and English Transitional Center (often shortened to just The Reading Center), is a free resource available to BYU-Idaho students and other Rexburg community members. We assisted ESL, developmental, advanced curriculum, and remedial writing students in improving pronunciation, spelling, vocabulary, and study skills. Basically, if someone wanted or needed help with learning English, honing study skills, overcoming learning disabilities (i.e. dyslexia, etc.), studying for graduate tests (MCAT, GRE, GMAT, etc.) or working on individual homework assignments, they came to the Reading Center.
Hierarchy
Jobs in the Reading Center work like a pyramid. Once you've been a tutor, you can tutor from that point on, even if you take on another position (i.e. supervisor or manager). However, employees generally need to work up the totem pole for several semesters before reaching administrative positions. An employee's pay is based off of certification level, seniority, and administrative responsibilities. During my three years at the Reading Center, I reached the cap salary permitted by campus student employment.
Study Skills Modules
During my time in the Reading Center, I also had the opportunity to assist our mother department, the Academic Learning Department*, with Study Skills modules. I brainstormed new material and edited outdated curriculum; additionally, I graded Critical Thinking, Notetaking, and Test Taking module assignments submitted by students enrolled in the respective online course.
*The Reading Center is under the Academic Learning Department's jurisdiction. The Academic Learning Department was renamed "Academic Support" Winter 2010.
