Reading Center Student Manager July 2009-April 2010
As student manager, I assisted in any Reading Center duties necessary. My responsibilities included, but weren't limited to:
coordinating between In-service, Kurzweil, New Tutor, and Projects supervisors and assigning our employees to these positions;
Because our tutors often needed to learn several different skills (i.e. how to teach Textbook Strategies [Study Skills] and how to use Kurzweil OCR program, amongst others), specialty supervisors were often appointed to fill that need. I helped coordinate between these supervisors by organizing inservice meetings, prioritizing and completing projects, and collecting midterm and final grades for our ENG 107 students.
solving personality and methodology conflicts between Reading Center employees;
In a workplace with 50+ employees, conflict is bound to arise. A large chunk of my responsibilities as manager was to address these conflicts and assist in resolving both student and tutor concerns. Sometimes the situation required switching tutors and students; other times I answered utilizing Reading Center policy or tutoring questions.
starting up and closing down the Reading Center at the beginning and closing of the semester;
Before the tutors and students arrive (and after they leave) for the semester, the Reading Center needed to be prepped to accommodate them. I put up and took down bulletin boards, organized student and tutor folders (which we used throughout the semester), and cleaned the tutor break room. Also, I printed off new Sassy (grading) sheets, session records, salary rubrics, and session reminder forms. During the semester, collecting these forms and making sure they were filled out correctly was another one of my responsibilities.
and presiding over in-services for new and continuing tutors.
As part of Reading Center-wide training, all tutors were required to attend inservices. Most of our meetings addressed tutoring session concerns, introduced new Reading Center policies, and refreshed Textbook Strategy and ESL curriculum.
